Chapter Twelve

LOGAN SPENT the rest of the day dealing with paperwork until his appointment with Jeff. He was tempted to cancel, but he had asked for help and he knew Jeff wouldn’t let go until he had seen him. And Logan had to be honest with himself. He might have been able to make the decision not to go back to London, but it didn’t mean he was well. Logan knew that it would take many months for him to recover from the assault.

At two thirty he left the cottage and drove the short distance to Jeff’s practice. Apart from his brief stint in hospital, Logan rarely went to the doctor’s. He felt strangely disempowered as he walked into the waiting room and gave his name at reception. The woman smiled at him and asked him to take a seat because Dr. Martin was running a little late. Logan nodded and took a seat in one corner of the waiting room. He picked up one of the magazines from the coffee table in the center of the room. Like a lot of doctors’ waiting rooms, the selection of magazines was eclectic and bizarre. Logan ended up reading an article on a CEO who’d given up his million-dollar lifestyle to help children in Africa. It was interesting enough to hold his attention, and initially he didn’t hear Jeff call his name. Someone tapped Logan on the arm and he looked up to see Jeff’s resigned expression.

“You’re welcome to spend the afternoon reading my magazines,” Jeff said. “Alternatively you could actually attend the appointment and discuss what you come for.”

Logan flushed. “Sorry.” He followed Jeff into his waiting room. “I didn’t hear you call me.”

“I realize that. I called your name three times before I gave up and came into the waiting room. It must have been a good article. What was it about? Don’t tell me, Kim Kardashian is pregnant by an alien.”

Logan huffed. “As if I’d read an article on Kim Kardashian.”

“Hey, I’ve read those articles. Real journalism, that is.” Jeff pointed to the seat next to his desk. “Okay, Dr. Wilde, let’s get down to business. How did it go in London?”

“How did you know about that?”

Jeff smiled and tapped the side of his nose. “A little birdie told me.”

“Sam has a big mouth,” Logan said sourly. “Yes, I went to London with Nick. Yes, I went into my room. Yes, it was horrible. What else do you need to know?”

“That was brave of you. It must’ve been very difficult. I’m not sure I could have taken a new boyfriend on a job like that.”

“I don’t think I would have done it without his help. He kind of forced me into it. He and Patrick,” Logan amended.

Jeff looked seriously at him. “Tell me honestly how you feel now.”

“Like….” Logan sought to formulate his thoughts. “Like I’ve made a decision. It’s not the one I ever thought I would make, but it’s the right one for now. I realize I can’t go back to working in that house and in that room.
